An IPN Series of local presences dedicated to the 26th Independence Day

Moldova is moving slowly but surely towards reform and democracy, thinks Nina Costiuc, Mayor of Chisinau’ suburban Budești commune since 1995.
Nina Costiuc says we should blame the “communist mentality” of many political leaders for the current state of affairs in our country. “Citizens are also responsible for the situation, because for years they voted wrong”.
“The stagnant economy has driven people to despair. A third of the country’s population are abroad to make a living. The elderly and many other groups are in a dramatic situation.
“Together with the Budești Council members we are constantly looking for solutions to redress the situation in our community. We’ve managed a few modest achievements in these tumultuous times of transition.
Nina Costiuc continues to counts on her community, on their desire to change Budești for the better and offer their children a happy future, on their aspiration to see the country integrated into the European Union.
“To me these twenty-six years meant work, love for the people, for the country and for my community. I had happy moments, I had achievements as well as failures, I experienced loss and saw unexpected comebacks”.
She says that during these twenty-six years many have lacked the sentiment of sacrifice for the national ideals.
“If they had this virtue—all these people who during these twenty-six years have declared their love for Moldova from their seats in the Government, Parliament, ministries and other state agencies—we would have a had a totally different situation. It saddens us immensely that many left their country, families, children and parents behind, all this great lot of people of working age, who are resourceful, talented, proactive and having a mindset different from the soviet one”
Despite the 1992 and geopolitical interests—says Nina Costiuc—Moldova has its own path and its destiny. |
“Moldova’s chance of succeeding as a nation is to further fight for its integrity and sovereignty, to cherish its national values and traditions, promote a friendly policy towards both the East and West, and find a peaceful way to unify the country”.
