Nicu Popescu: Plan for implementing EC recommendations is one more step towards accession

By approving the plan for implementing the nine recommendations of the European Commision (EC), the Republic of Moldova took the next imprtant step towards accession to the Eureoan Union, said Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. According to him, the plan was agreed by the National Commission for European Integration, IPN reports.

The document contains actions, time limits and the institutions responsible for the implementation of the key measures, such as the justice sect reform and the fight against corruption, the removal of shortcomings from the electoral legislation. The plan envisions the de-oligarchization, stepping up of the fight against organized crime and recovery of asses, strengthening of capacities of the public administration and management of public finances, involvement of civil society in the decision-making process. The document also stipulates the enhanced protection of human rights and the combating of gender violence.

The plan was consulted with representatives of civil society and the European Commission. “We are determined to transform the country according to the European model by work and by doing the reforms wanted by the citizens,” stated Nicu Popescu.

The European Council offered the EU candidate status to Moldova at a summit on June 23 after the country presented the responses to the accession questionnaire. The Moldovan authorities hailed the decision as historic and as one that opens a new page in the country’s modern history.
