The minister of foreign affairs of Moldova said an eventual attack on Ukraine staged from the Transnistrian region is not a plausible scenario. Nicu Popescu noted that no suspect actions that would point to military preparations have been seen on the uncontrolled territory of the Republic of Moldova. He voiced hope that the tensions between Moscow and Kiev will not degenerate into a war, while the Republic of Moldova will maintain its position of neutral state that does not support militarized interaction between states, IPN reports.

Nicu Popescu noted Moldova considers the conflicts between states should be solved peacefully, by dialogue. The withdrawal of the Russian troops from Moldova’s territory is a priority for the Moldovan diplomatic service.

“The Republic of Moldova insists on the sovereign right of the states to decide the own security policies. The Republic of Moldova firmly supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine. The withdrawal of the military troops that were deployed illegally on the territory of the Republic of Moldova is an aspect on which we have insisted the past few weeks. Our national interest is to build a democratic, prosperous society by ensuring peace in the Republic of Moldova. We bank on peaceful interaction between states. We, as a neutral state, avoid conflict positions, bur defend our principles: territorial integrity, continuation of the European integration process, insistence on the withdrawal of the Russian troops,” Nicu Popescu stated in the talk show “Thursday with Liliana Barbăroșie” on the public TV channel.

He said the Republic of Moldova is on the side of the states that do not behave aggressively towards other countries. The executive gets ready also for negative developments in the region. However, the probability that Russia would attack Ukraine from the Transnistrian region is very low.

“The Republic of Moldova is on the side of the forces, states that interact with other states by peaceful methods and do not threaten other states militarily. This increasingly militarized interaction tendency in the region does not suit our society. On the instructions of Missis President, all the public institutions have been bracing for any type of scenarios. All the mates in the Cabinet are engaged in these preparations. However, our hope is that this crisis will be avoided. On our side, southwest of Ukraine, there are no unordinary actions that would reveal military preparations or risks,” stated Nicu Popescu.

Two days ago, the Russian Federation announced the partial withdrawal of its troops from the Ukrainian border. The Ministry of Defense of Russia said that military exercises were being staged. In reply, Kiev said it will believe Russia only when all the troops mobilized on the joint borders are pulled out.
