Keeping the memory of the Holocaust and the victims of totalitarian regimes alive is a duty of democratic societies. At a distance of 78 years from the Holocaust, the international community and the Republic of Moldova remember the victims of that unprecedented cataclysm in the history of mankind, the compassion being piously aimed at the innocent victims, the survivors of this horrible crime against humanity and the descendants and relatives of these, Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, stated on the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, IPN reports.
The official noted that this day is full of profound symbolism and reminds of one of the saddest pages in the European history, which remains a deep wound for the whole mankind. “At the beginning of this month, we learned with sadness about the death Joseph Belous, ex-president of the Association of Former Prisoners of Nazi Prisons. Our moral responsibility, of everyone, is to educate society in the spirit of human values, fundamental human rights and freedoms, tolerance and nondiscrimination and combating of anti-Semitism and any other forms of xenophobia,” stated Nicu Popescu.
According to the minister, the Republic of Moldova during the past eight years has advanced substantially in the education, research and commemoration of the Holocaust. Clear policy documents were adopted to promote the memory of the Holocaust and the culture of tolerance. Moldova takes part as an observer in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, being among the first states that adopted the working definition of anti-Semitism. It also undertook concrete commitments in this regard at the Malmo International Forum.
“Today, rendering homage to the victims of the Holocaust, I want to note that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration will continue promoting, through the available diplomatic instruments, the strengthening of the action framework at national and international levels so as to prevent and penalize anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination, on the basis of any criterion,” stated the official.
In connection with International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration joined the annual campaign #WeRemember that is conducted as part of the International Holocaust Remembrance Week.
