Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu said that there are six days left until the constitutional referendum, when a decision with a real impact on the future of the country will be taken. Every vote counts as there is no second round in this referendum. It is crucial for everyone to participate and make their voice heard, the former minister said, quoted by IPN.

“We all want a good future, good infrastructure, good schools, good universities, good roads and we want to be respected by the state. The only way to ensure this for us is to join the European Union and I think this is imperative for absolutely all citizens of the Republic of Moldova, even those who are not necessarily pro-European today, but they still want to keep their language, traditions, customs and also their freedom,” stated Nicu Popescu.

According to him, these people do not want to be forced into war, to be beaten, persecuted by governments for their political choices, for the language they speak. And only the European Union can ensure this future in which the citizens are respected in a democratic, free and prosperous environment.

A national referendum on enshrining the European course in the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova will take place on October 20, simultaneously with the presidential election. The plebiscite is held on the initiative of President Maia Sandu, who asked the Parliament on December 24, 2023 to initiate and organize it. It happened after the European Council approved the opening of accession negotiations for the Republic of Moldova earlier the same month. The amendment of the supreme law aims to confirm the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and to declare the integration into the EU as a strategic objective of the country. At the referendum, the citizens will answer “Yes” or “No” the question: “Are you for amending the Constitution so as to enshrine the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union in it?”
