The head of state shares many of the concerns stated by the people and regrets that a situation when the people have to take to the streets is witnessed, but he will not resign. This is the position of President Nicolae Timofti, who is convinced that his resignation will lead to instability in Moldova and to a vacuum of power that will determine a new political crisis. “I took up this post in order to bring to an end a period of instability that lasted for two years and a half and I do not want to be the one who generates another such period,” reads the press statement issued by the President, quoted by IPN.

Nicolae Timofti notes with regret that the ascertained weakness of the institutions whose duty is to intervene to enforce the law determined to a certain extent such a negative climate in society. “I refer especially to the inefficiency of the National Bank, the National Commission for Financial Markets, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the National Anticorruption Center and the courts of law. I can tell you that I was and am aware of all the major problems of the state. I’m regularly informed by the special services and other competent bodies about the situation in different areas: defense, security, economy, financial-banking sector etc.” said the head of state, who considers that the protest mounted in the Great National Assembly Square on September 6 is a democratic exercise.

Nicolae Timofti remarks that he acted in accordance with the powers offered to him by the Constitution to prevent deviations. He had discussions centering on the problems that appeared and on possible solutions with high-ranking officials from the country and abroad. He personally discussed with the National Bank governor for several times and asked him to provide explanations for the Bank’s actions or inaction and is surprised that the current governor and the whole administration of the Bank continue to work, but reminds that their dismissal is not within the competence of the President.

Nicolae Timofti also said that the internal and external forces that permanently acted to destabilize the internal situation and to transform the country into a province will profit without delay from a possible chaos in Moldova. The instability wanted by the forces that are hostile to Moldova would stop the country’s development for an indefinite period. The danger for the country to be prevented from following its natural development course, towards integration into the European Union, is now greater than ever.

In accordance with the constitutional provisions, the head of state will soon give a speech in Parliament and will refer to the main problems of the nation. He will also formulate the objectives that, according to him, must be set to overcome the difficult situation faced by the country.
