President Nicolae Timofti possesses information according to which particular political forces and oligarchic groups want to thwart the country’s European course and to increase their influence on the state institutions. The head of state expressed his concerns in this regard in a meeting with a group of ambassadors of EU member states on December 17, 2015, IPN reports, quoting the presidential press service.

“Nicolae Timofti is concerned about the information he possesses, regarding the danger that the European course of the Republic of Moldova will be thwarted by the concerted effort of interested political forces and oligarchic groups that want to influence the presidential institution and to increase their influence on other state bodies. The President told the EU ambassadors that he will not yield to the pressure exerted by different ways on him and his family with the aim of influencing his decisions,” it is said in the service’s press release.

The head of state informed the European diplomats about the political situation in Moldova, in particular about the process of identifying a candidate for the post of Prime Minister, presenting his view about the subsequent political developments.

The ambassadors expressed their support for Nicolae Timofti’s position, saying they personally support him in his efforts to promote the European practices. “Any pressure exerted on the head of state is unacceptable. We wil support a government that will make the institutions function, will destroy the system of captive state, will unite society, will reduce corruption and will ensure the country’s energy independence. We want the Republic of Moldova to develop positively and stably,” said the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola.

“Stability is important, but maintaining democracy in the Republic of Moldova is even more important,” stated the Ambassador of France Pascal Vagogne.

Germany’s Ambassador Ulrike Knotz said she was shocked to hear about pressure being exerted on the head of state and his family.

For his part, the Ambassador of the Czech Republic Jaromír Kvapil stated: “Your opponents are powerful, but we have confidence in you.”

Romania’s Ambassador Marius Lazurcae expressed his support for the President’s actions and urged forming a new pro-European government in Moldova as swiftly as possible.

President Timofti thanked the European diplomats for the support they offer to Moldova and voiced hope that the Moldovan political forces will find solutions to overcome the current political crisis and will form a pro-European government.
