President Nicolae Timofti on October 28 had a meeting with the new Head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau Jose Luis Herrero, IPN reports, quoting the presidential press service.
The head of state said the support provided by the Council of Europe during the last two decades contributed to strengthening the democratic institutions and to ensuring the observance of the human rights in Moldova. He expressed his conviction that the November 30 parliamentary electrons will take place in accordance with all the democratic norms and will confirm the progress made by Moldova on the path to integration into the EU.
“The Moldovan authorities want the monitoring of Moldova by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) to be ended so as to switch over to the post-monitoring stage. I hope the legislative elections of this autumn will represent a plausible reason for taking such a decision,” stated Nicolae Timofti.
For his part, Jose Luis Herrero underlined the importance of coherently implementing the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in Moldova, especially in order to reform the justice sector and to prevent and fight corruption.
Moldova has been monitored by the PACE since 1995.
