President Nicolae Timofti said he will never recognize the border of the self-proclaimed Transnistrian republic. After the June 17 meeting of the Supreme Security Council, which was held behind closed doors, he stated that the situation in Transnistria was discussed even if the issue wasn’t included in the agenda and they examined the information presented by the Reintegration Office. Nicolae Timofti stressed that the authorities always monitor the situation in the region, IPN reports.

“We should discuss more profoundly and think about measures that should be taken to resolve the problem. Somebody wants a new conflict in the Transnistrian region. When analyzing the behavior of the separatists and of persons from the bodies of other states, it’s clear that somebody wants to destabilize the situation in Moldova,” said the head of state.

He also said that when Moldova is close to solving the problems related to integration into the EU, the Transnistrian administration resorts to provocations. “The opposition surprised me by its ‘non-state’ position on the situation in Moldova, threatening with protests and civil unrest. We must be calm and help Moldova become a prosperous country,” said Nicolae Timoft.

The head of the Security and Information Service Mihai Balan said the latest developments in Transnistria represent a threat to state security. “The situation arouses concern. We have leverage and instruments to inform the country’s administration about these acts. It is a provocation. Similar provocations were staged earlier. We must be cautious and keep a balance so as to avoid dissension in society,” he added.

On June 10, the Transnistrian leader Yevgeny Shevchuk signed a so-called bill on the ‘state border’ of Transnistria. The border includes Bender town and three villages, among which Varnita, which are within the jurisdiction of the constitutional authorities. The official Chisinau declared that Tiraspol’s decision runs counter to the legal framework and the logic of the Transnistrian conflict settlement process.
