“I reread the Declaration of Sovereignty and found in it provisions that not only didn’t lose topicality, but also continue to be absolute priority. They are so clear and relevant as if they were written today,” President Nicolae Timofti said in Parliament on June 23, when it is 25 years of the adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.
The head of state reminded that by this document, guarantees and equal legal chances to take part in the management of the state and the public affairs were offered to all the people, parties, public organizations, movements and religious organizations.
“Our people and the Republic of Moldova continue to be in the situation to claim the right to exercise their sovereignty all over the country’s territory. We will be closer to the accomplishment of this national ideal and holy desideratum if we anchor more in the European area, where the individual and national rights are guaranteed and respected both by institutions and the people,” stated Nicolae Timofti.
Twenty-five years ago, the members of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic unanimously proclaimed the country’s sovereignty. The document laid at the basis of the Declaration of Independence adopted on August 27, 1991 and served as a benchmark for drafting the first Constitution, which was passed in 1994.
