President of Moldova Nicolae Timofti signed a decree to give state awards to a group of participants in the cleanup of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. The awards are conferred for contribution to the social protection of the people affected by ionizing radiation, merits in ensuring ecological balance and intense organizational activity, IPN reports.

The Head of State also transmitted a message on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of the Chernobyl Tragedy. In his message, Nicolae Timofti says that remembering the victims and honoring the veterans are a duty for the citizens of Moldova.

“Undoubtedly, this serious tragedy that was the harshest and merciless nuclear accident in the history, by its repercussions that are still felt, remains in our memory and therefore represents an incontestable proof of the value of the human life. Thirty years passed since the nuclear disaster that claimed many human lives and mutilated the destinies of those who, by courage and sacrifice, ensured the continuity of our nation,” reads the message.

The President also said that the toughing up of the security and stability norms in the region can mean improved attitude and preoccupation with the challenges of time. “That’s why I’m convinced that the good neighborhood traditions and mutual respect will be a shield for preventing a repeat of such tragic events,” he stated.

On April 26, it is 30 years of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. According to official reports, about 3,500 Moldovans took part in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident.
