President Nicolae Timofti said that during his two years of office, he wasn’t always satisfied with the steps taken to combat corruption. Therefore, he called on the competent institutions to more firmly fight this phenomenon. The head of state considers the fact that he didn’t manage to contribute to removing the Communist symbols is a failure of his in the first half of his tenure, IPN reports.
Nicolae Timofti told a news conference that his priority was to ensure peace and internal stability in Moldova. He not always adopted drastic attitudes towards negative actions so as not to cause destabilization. In the two years of office, he focused mainly on foreign policy, justice, security, the army and the Transnistrian conflict.
As to the accomplishments, the head of state said that Moldova is ready to sign the Association Agreement with the EU and to obtain a liberalized visa regime with the Schengen countries. “These are achievements of the people and the administration. Another result is my contribution to solving the political crisis of last spring. Together we managed to find a way out of that not at all easy situation,” he stated.
As regards the Communist symbols, Nicolae Timofti said it is very important to remove the symbols of a past, when a lot of persons suffered, from the people’s mentality.
Asked about the decision of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova to demolish the Soviet monument located in the square in front of the institution and to erect a monument to the Romanian language, the President said he always wanted a monument to the Romanian language to exist in Chisinau and it is up to the specialists to decide where it should be built.
