Former Socialist MP Nicolae Pascaru said they expect the Government will ensure a more extensive dialogue with society and the opposition and warned the ruling party that the attempt to bring all the power under its control is an incorrect approach.

“We can understand our political opoonents as the reform, the struggle to change this system is very hard. The system sabotages,” Nicolae Pascaru stated in a debate held by IPN

The ex-MP admits that the current government came to power in a peaceful way, enjoying increased trust on the part of the citizens. But now it bears very big responsibility, he noted. “We should not forget that the Democratic Party (...), together with the team of oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc, also came with good intentions and we saw what happened later.”

According to Nicolae Pascaru, democracy is when society becomes involved in the “political game” and understands it, while “the rules of the game” should be clear. The subjugation of CEC, the attacks on the prosecution service, the replacement of functionaries from the system without contests and without rules understood by the citizens will leave a negative imprint on this government.

The current government’s attempt to seize the whole power is wrong and this will not be a democratic process and this team will turn into an oligarchic one or will promote foreign interests.

“A danger is taking shape as the government attracted a great credit of trust, of over 60%, and this is a lot! In the name of the Republic of Moldova, it should do its best for the institutions to function in a democratic way”. Nicolae Pascaru noted the people at state institutions should be named according to merits, not according to political loyalty. According to him, institutional memory in Moldova is at a very low level and the system cannot be strengthened owing to the political forces that always try to subjugate it.

The public debate “Government’s actions in relation to regulatory and inspection institutions: between de-capture and democratic backsliding” was staged by IPN in the framework of the project “Developing Political Culture through Public Debates” that is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
