Nicolae Juravski was reelected as president of the National Olympic and Sports Committee. The double Olympic champion was fielded by most of the national sports federations, IPN reports.
His opponent Tudor Casapu, who is also an Olympic champion, wasn’t registered as a runner in the presidential elections because he didn’t present the necessary documents to the Central Election Commission. Casapu was proposed only by the Weightlifting Federation that he heads.
Nicolae Juravski won gold at the Seoul Olympic Games of 1988 and silver at the Atlanta Olympics of 1996 in double canoeing, together with Victor Reneiski of Belarus. This is the fifth term in office for Juravski as president of the National Olympic and Sports Committee. In 1997-2001, he served as vice president, while from March 30, 2001 he has headed the Committee.
