NGO to Chisinau administration: Stop killing animals

Representatives and supporters of the public association for the protection of animals “Alga” Monday picketed the Chisinau City Hall, protesting against the murdering of stray dogs, Info-Prim Neo reports. The protesters said they are dissatisfied with the steps taken by the local authorities to deal with the problem of stray dogs. “We all want a clean and safe town, but killing these dogs is not a solution to the problem,” said Olga Shefler, one of the protesters. “Alga” is in favor of sterilizing the stray dogs and placing them in a shelter. The Chisinau Municipal Council allotted a plot of land on which to build a shelter for animals, but the construction works are not yet over. The sterilization campaign conducted by the local authorities in partnership with a Romanian animal protection organization was suspended last spring following political tensions between Chisinau and Bucharest.
