The National Food Safety Agency (NFSA) intends to open a phytosanitary and veterinary checkpoint in Cuciurgan so that the Transnistrian business entities could obtain authorizations for transporting food products through the Transnistrian segment of the border in the customs post, IPN reports.
“We want the opening of this post to facilitate first of all the export of products that are subject to phytosanitary and veterinary control from the eastern districts as now all the goods exported from the Transnistrian region are certified by our local units, first of all the vegetal products as substantial quantities of grain, sunflower seeds, fruit and vegetables are exported from Transnistria. These products must be accompanied by phytosanitary certificates issued by the local subdivisions of the NFSA,” the Agency’s director general Gheorghe Gaberi told a news conference.
According to him, the coordination of transit is a practice envisioned by the national legislation of Moldova, the international and EU practice, while such countries as Russia, Belarus and Ukraine have permanently asked that the transit of products of animal origin that cross their territory should be coordinated beforehand. This enables to assess the risks and avoid the bringing into the country of goods coming from unfavorable countries or regions.
“Border control should be stepped up to avoid infection with African swine fever, which is a seriously monitored disease and the imposition of the condition to coordinate the transportation is due to the fact that we cooperate with the World Health Organization. The importers have been subject to control until now as well. The importers from Transnistria should be in equal conditions with those from the right bank of the Nistru. I think this procedure is also in the interests of the people from the left side of the Nistru because they are also subject to the risk of being infected with swine fever,” stated Gheorghe Gaberi.
Ukraine decided that the food products from May 20 can be transported through the Transnistrian segment only after the transit is coordinated with the National Food Safety Agency of Chisinau.
