A newborn was found in a bag in a garbage bin in Buiucani district of Chisinau in the afternoon of July 10. The child was rushed to the hospital where doctors established that this was in a serious state.

Press officer of the Municipal Clinical Hospital No. 1 Cristina Ipati has told IPN that the girl suffered hypothermia and her cardio-respiratory system was affected. The child also suffered because she was immediately separated from the placenta.

According to Cristina Ipati, who is a gynecologist, the girl was born on time and weighs over 3 kg. It is alleged that she was abandoned immediately after she was born at home.

Meanwhile, the mother was identified. This was hospitalized and is guarded by police officers. The young woman said it was an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy. She didn’t want to see her child.

A criminal case was started and the woman faces up to two years in jail for leaving the child in danger. If the doctors determine that the child suffered serious bodily injuries, the woman will serve up to four years behind bars.

A babybox for leaving unwanted children was set up at the Mother and Child Institute three years ago. But, given that the necessary legislation wasn’t adopted, this service cannot be implemented.
