The Democratic Party (PDM) calls on the Chisinau City Hall not to ignore the disabled people when selecting the 90 new trolleybuses that will be bought from the money provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The PDM says the new public units of transport must meet the needs of the people, especially of the disabled ones, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique from the party.
“The capital city needs new means of transport. Most of the trolleybuses that run on routes today are worn-out. The mothers with small children, the elderly people and the disabled persons are the most affected by lack of proper access,” it is said in the communique.
The PDM says it is a moral duty to take the needs of these people into account when purchasing new trolleybuses and when issuing licenses for construction, trade and transport.
“The lack of wheelchair access to drugstores, shops and public institutions, of traffic lights with acoustic signs and of other things needed by the disabled persons make them become isolated,” the PDM says. “The procurement of trolleybuses with wheelchair access will help to meet the European standards and will confirm the local authorities' attachment to the European values.”
The EBRD will provide a loan of €10 million and a grant of €3 million for buying 90 new trolleybuses.
