SA “Apă-Canal Chisinau” (ACC) said a new technology is applied at the wastewater treatment station to free the municipality of Chisinau from the unbearable smell that becomes even more unpleasant in summer. According to the supplier, the new technology was designed and tested with the help of national and Russian specialists.

In a press release, ACC says the smell appears as a result of putrefaction processes. The situation is worsened by the appearance of small food enterprises that throw untreated waste into the general sewer, which leads to an accentuated rise in organic pollution. This increases the burden on the wastewater treatment station and the air around has an increased concentration of components that are harmful when inhaled, such as hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan, which are the main sources of the intolerable smell.

A group of engineers, biologists and chemists led by SA “Apă-Canal Chisinau” solved this problem. The advanced know-how technology was worked out especially for dealing with the problems at the wastewater treatment stations of the municipality of Chisinau. The technology is designed to disinfect the mud deriving from wastewater by inhibiting the reproduction of harmful bacteria and fungi and blocking the sources of unpleasant smell. After being treated with reactive substances, the mud can be used as a fertilizer in agriculture. The equipment is also protected from corrosion.

The reagents needed for this technology are produced in Moldova and this ensures the uninterrupted supply of the product and excludes dependence on foreign suppliers. It is planned to continue the works to improve the purification, disinfection and deodorizing of wastewater together with leading Moldovan research institutions.

With the very efficient optimization opportunities, the cost of the installed technology is the most profitable one compared with the earlier formulated proposals for eliminating the unpleasant smell in the city, said ACC.
