The Prosecutor General’s Office said new suspects are being investigated within the cases of frauds committed at Banca de Economii (BEM). The anticorruption prosecutors summoned another vice president of the Administration Board of the National Commission for Financial Markets, a member of this Board and two members of the Administration Board of BEM for questioning. These are suspected of abuse of power and professional misconduct, IPN report.

According to prosecutors, the functionaries of the National Commission for Financial Markets are investigated within the extended inquiries for misconduct when voting amendments to the State Securities Register, which led to the registration of the additional issue of shares at Banca de Economii.

The prosecutors investigate the frauds committed in the banking sector in different periods, the persons who managed the bank in these periods and the actions/inaction of the authorities and public institutions of different ranks.

Two more members of the Administration Board of BEM are investigated for abuse of power as a result of which they cased considerable damage to the bank.

The National Anticorruption Center announced today that the Buiucani Court placed the former BEM president Grigore Gachkevich under remand detention for 30 days.

Three days ago, the Buiucani Court rejected the request of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office to extend the pretrial detention for the ex-president of the Lending Committee of Banca de Economii Grigore Gachkevich for 30 days. The suspect was set free in the courtroom. After the hearing, the prosecutors said they will challenge the court’s decision in the Appeals Court. However, shortly afterward the prosecutors and officers of the National Anticorruption Center arrested him again on new counts of fraud.
