“The economic reforms carried out in different areas during the last few years created conditions for implementing information technology in Moldova,” the outgoing First Deputy Prime Minister and Minster of Economy and Trade Igor Dodon said at the opening of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Week. Presently, the IT sector accounts for 9% of the GDP, Info- Prim Neo reports. “It is a significant figure if we take into account the fact that several years ago agriculture was the main sector that formed the GDP. The IT sector can produce a large surplus value in the country’s economy, being attractive to the young employees,” Dodon said. Outgoing Deputy Minister of Information Technology Oleg Rotaru said that the ICT Week aims to foster and strengthen the efforts of the state bodies, scientific institutions and companies to build and develop an information society. The new strategy for developing information technology will be widely discussed. There will be presented Internet services provided by public institutions for the people and businesses. “A number of public institutions actively implement advanced technology, but for this technology to become functional the people should use it. That’s why special attention will be paid to training and to opening of Internet public centers,” Oleg Rotaru said. The ICT Week includes an international conference on information and communications technology, a conference on information security and a NATO-supported seminar themed “Cyber Terrorism: Prevention and Protection”. There will be presented the results of the contest “Journalist Writing on ICT”.
