Specialists of the Zoology Institute of the Academy of Sciences discovered a new species of dragonfly in Moldova. Leucorrhinia pectoralis forms part of the Libellulidae family, the order Odonata, Info-Prim Neo reports. Species of dragonfly are found in most of the European countries. They have graceful bodies and transparent wings and live in water only when they are larvae. They seldom reach high density. “Leucorrhinia pectoralis prefers sweat, shallow waters with rich vegetation that have half of their areas uncovered with plants. They play an important role as they are a reliable indicator of the water quality,” the Academy says in a communiqué. The dragonflies are predatory insects as they eat mosquitoes. In 2008, entomologists of the Zoology Institute had found 25 new species of insects for the Moldovan fauna.
