Europe needs a new security system now that Russia violated all the previous agreements, annexing the Crimean peninsula. The affected states must make sure that the population is informed correctly and must combat manipulation by the Russian mass media, said participants in the debate “Moldovan-Ukrainian relations in new geopolitical and regional security conditions”, staged by IPN News Agency in partnership with Radio Moldova.

Ukrainian Ambassador Serhii Pyrozhkov said the situation in Ukraine can be overcome by strengthening society and by creating a new security system in the region with the help of the international community. It’s not about the creation or accession to a security block, but rather about the working out of a mechanism for implementing the security system so that those who defy it are penalized.

Statehood should also be strengthened and the power should be decentralized. An important role is played by the information policy. Ukraine loses the information confrontation on its territory, with the Russian TV channels reporting the situation erroneously.

Head of the Center for Political Analysis and Consultancy “Politicon” Anatol Taranu also considers that strengthening society is a possibility for overcoming the crisis. He is convinced that the federalization of such states as Moldova and Ukraine is not appropriate in the current conditions. “It’s a catastrophe to federalize the states that are divided at identity level. This means the legalization of this division,” he stated, adding that without healthy patriotism it’s practically impossible to keep the statehood of a state.

Expert Igor Botan, who is the executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy ADEPT, considers that the dialogue with the people must be improved, while Moldova and Ukraine must show to the strategic partners, especially the EU, that they are reliable states. At the same time, the partners from the East must not forget the good things in the bilateral relations and in their common past and that a country cannot be made to join a Eurasian union by threats and pressure.

The debate “Moldovan-Ukrainian relations in new geopolitical and regional security conditions” is the 31st of the series of debates “Development of political culture in public debates” that are organized by IPN in concert Radio Moldova and with the support of the German foundation Hanns Seidel.
