The legislature of the breakaway republic of Transnistria has passed amendments to the Law on Customs Fees, according to which, effective 1 January 2009, the import of automobiles older than 14 years into the region will be banned, Info-Prim Neo reports. The amendments also translate into higher fees for the import of used cars: the customs tax of $0.15 paid for each cubic centimeter of the engine of a car under 3 years old will be raised to $0.5 per cubic centimeter, regardless of the car's model or age. In addition, if the owners of cars used less than 2 years from the moment of registration decide to cross the Transnistrian border, they will have to pay twice the value of the customs tax. By 2011 the Transnistrian legislators intend to outlaw the import of cars older than 10 years.
