The Ministry of Social Protection, Family and Child on Thursday, March 6, launched the Reform for Social Protection of Disabled People, a new strategy aimed to further the social inclusion of persons with disabilities. Lucia Gavrilita, Deputy Social Protection Minister, has told Info-Prim Neo that the strategy provides for a series of modifications that will be put into life in the nearest future. According to her, the social protection system needs to be modified because it currently doesn’t provide adequate financial assistance, the social services are poorly developed, and the disabled people are unable to integrate into the society. Lucia Gavrilita says that, unlike other projects in the field, the freshly launched strategy proposes methods of encouraging and stimulating the disabled persons to be more active and earn a worthy place in the society. “The emphasis is on the participatory spirit of the disabled persons. We also want to encourage them to find employment and help them reintegrate”, Lucia Gavrilita pointed out, adding that the activities proposed by the strategy are focused on discovering the aptitudes and qualities of the disabled people. According to official statistics, Moldova is home to about 165,000 persons with disabilities. Three-thirds of them are in the age group 40-59, and 56% are men.
