Representatives of civil society came together in front of the Parliament Building in the evening of May 10 to protest against the substitution of the electoral system. The activists spoke to those who took part in the event about the disadvantages of the uninominal and mixed-member electoral systems, IPN reports.
Programs director at the Center for Politics and Reforms Dumitru Alaiba said the initiators of the change in the electoral system present invented advantages. Moreover, these accuse civil society of pursuing political goals. But being against a law does not mean pursuing political goals, but taking attitude to the government’s actions.
Dumitru Alaiba noted the proposed changes will favor the ruling parties and, even if the vote is given to one candidate, this can easily defect to the ruling party. The mixed system favors the candidates with money and those who have access to administrative resources, but this does not mean democracy. This system was recognized as a failure in Romania and Ukraine. It was determined that this system does not fight corruption. On the contrary, it amplifies this phenomenon, including among MPs.
Expert Sergiu Tofilat said the people do not accept to be manipulated and no longer want to tolerate acts of corruption. The people want to live in a free state where they can express themselves freely and where there is future, while those who went abroad can return home.
Activist Vitalie Voznoi said the bill to replace the electoral system passed by Parliament in the first reading on May 5 is a very big political mistake.
The representatives of civil society plan to mount protests against the modification of the electoral system in front of the Parliament Building every day starting at 5pm. A large-scale protest will be staged in the Great National Assembly Square of Chisinau at midday on May 14.
