A technical assistance program for strengthening good governance will be implemented in Parliament during July 2016 – December 2019. The goal of the program is to accelerate the implementation of the Association Agreement, to adjust the national legislation to the European one, to increase the efficiency and transparency of the legislative body and to encourage gender equality, IPN reports.

According to the legislature’s press service, the new program for ensuring the institutional development of Parliament is financed by the Government of Sweden and will be implemented with the support of the UNDP in Moldova. The ceremony to sign the framework document of the project “Strengthening of Parliament Governance in Moldova” involved Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu, Swedish Ambassador in Chisinau Signe Burgstaller, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Moldova Dafina Gherceva.

“This project is a novelty for the Republic of Moldova and is a new instrument in the cooperation between Parliament, the UNDP and the Government of Sweden. I hope that it will be a good start for doing many nice things with impact for strengthening the Parliament’s institutional capacities so that the legislative body becomes the most organized institution in the country,” stated Andrian Candu.

Dafina Gercheva noted that the new project matches the UNDP’s objective to strengthen Parliament as an institution. The goal of the parliamentary assistance in Moldova is to assist the legislature to fulfill its representative, legislative and inspection functions in a democratic, transparent and efficient way as this will help gain the people’s confidence.

“The elaboration of this project is the result of the efforts made by the sides involved in our common objective of strengthening the institutional capacities of Parliament and in aligning the legislative body with the European good governance standards,” stated Ambassador Signe Burgstaller.

The total value of the project is about US$4.3 million.
