The National Unity Party (PUN) has a new president. This is MP Octavian Țîcu, who was elected leader at the party’s second extraordinary congress on December 7, IPN reports.

The congress also chose the party’s former president Anatol Șalaru as secretary general of the PUN and made changes to the party’s statutes and political program. One of the changes is the replacement of the post of executive president with that of secretary general.

At the parliamentary elections of 2019, Octavian Țîcu entered Parliament on the ticket of the ACUM bloc. He became a nonaffiliated MP after announcing in September that he left the parliamentary group of ACUM, Platform Dignity and Truth. Țîcu also ran in this autumn’s mayoral elections in Chisinau and got almost 5% of the vote.

The National Unity Party was founded in February 2016 and promotes Moldova’s reunification with Romania. Former President of Romania Traian Băsescu is the party’s president of honor.
