The Ministry of Health intends to extend the list of compensated drugs with medicines needed for treating incurable or rare diseases. The new list will appear in the near future, IPN reports.

In a meeting of the commission for ensuing security of pharmaceutical assistance, Deputy Minister of Health Octavian Grama said the Ministry drafted a bill providing for the exclusion of the previous provisions by which the drugs containing several active substances were removed from the list of compensated drugs, prescribed by the family doctor, and submitted it to the Government for consideration. It was argued that the patients’ access to drugs of a high quality is thus limited.

Octavian Grama also said that after discussing with members of organizations that include persons suffering from rare diseases, it was decided to put drugs used to treat the bronchial asthma, hemophilia and chronic diseases that need treatment throughout life on the list of compensated drugs. The list was sent to the National Health Insurance Company.

The company’s vice director general Iurie Osoianu said the number of patients who benefit from compensated drugs is rather high. “The allocations for purchasing medicines for treating rare diseases represent about 7% of the spending. We are now analyzing the cost-efficiency of these drugs that will be added to the list,” he stated.

A sum of 167 million lei was allocated this year for buying medicines included in the list of compensated drugs.
