The current legal framework concerning the provision of scholarships is outdated and the scholarships are offered inequitably . These do not stimulate performance and are offered even if the average grade is 5.8. The new mechanism for providing scholarships in the national education system was discussed in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Pavel Filip on September 10, IPN has learned from the Government’s press service.
According to the Premier, the scholarships are designed to encourage learning and it would be right to provide fewer, but larger scholarships to those who deserve these.
Under the new concept, common regulations concerning the provision of scholarships at all the levels and specialties will be designed so as to ensure equity in the national education system and to stimulate performance.
The categories of scholarships will also be optimized. There will be one merit scholarship – the Excellence Scholarship of the Republic – instead of the four merit scholarships existing at present. Attractive scholarships will be instituted for the professional formation areas that face a shortage of staff.
Pavel Filip requested to set up a working group that will carry out an analysis by areas, will determine the number of specialists needed in the economy and will work out the concept of the new mechanism for providing scholarships.
Recently, the Government increased the scholarships of students by 5% in a move to stimulate academic performance and to increase the attractiveness of higher and technical professional education institutions.
