The current landfill in Cahul municipality is to be closed and a new landfill will be built in its place, as well as a sorting and composting station. Also, transfer stations will be erected in Cania, Taraclia and Comrat towns. All the works are to be carried out with a grant of €4.34 million provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. On Wednesday, the Cabinet approved the signing of the agreement in this regard, IPN reports.

The agreement comes to ensure the implementation of the Moldova Solid Waste Project that provides for the development of infrastructure in three waste management regions, according to the national Waste Management Strategy.

The southern area of the country is covered, namely the districts of Cahul, Cantemir, Taraclia, as well as the districts of Vulcănești, Ceadâr-Lunga and Comrat of ATU Gagauzia. In this region, waste transportation, sorting, recycling, composting equipment and machinery, including dumpsters, containers and vehicles, will be purchased.

“It is a nationwide project whose purpose is to create a sustainable solid waste recycling system, substantially reducing the impact on the environment and contributing significantly to improving the quality of life of citizens and developing a cleaner and healthier environment in Moldova,” Minister of Environment Sergiu Lazarencu stated in the Cabinet’s meeting.

The Grant Agreement is to be signed at the annual conference of the Moldova Partnership Platform, which was scheduled to take place on September 17 in Chisinau.
