A new mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) started work in Moldova. In a meeting with Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, the mission’s head Max Alier said the institution he represents will continue to focus on subjects of common interest so as to deal with the challenges and achieve the objectives set in the cooperation with Moldova, IPN reports.
According to a communiqué from the Government, Nikolay Gueorguiev, whose term in office expires, said that changes will take place in the team of the IMF Resident Office in Chisinau over the next few months. He expressed his conviction that the new team of the IMF will cooperate as openly and efficiently with the Government of Moldova so that a new cooperation program that will ensure the achievement of the set objectives is worked out by joint effort.
“The main objective is to maintain macroeconomic stability in Moldova and to promote reforms that will ensure economic growth, which, in turn, will create solid basis for improving the living standards,” stated Nikolay Gueorguiev.
The Premier assured that the Government remained cooperative in the relations with this important financial institution. “The IMF’s goals coincide with the Moldova Government’s goals – to ensure macroeconomic stability and the country’s sustainable development. In this respect, we aim to continue the efficient cooperation with the IMF, ensuring the predictability needed for a constructive dialogue,” he said.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Valeriu Lazar said that despite the latest difficulties, Moldova saw an economic growth of 3.5% in the first quarter of this year. Efficient policies are needed to ensure sustainable development by diminishing the negative effects of the foreign factors on the macroeconomic situation. The expertise and assistance of the IMPF is very valuable to Moldova.
In the period between June 19 and June 24, the IMF mission will have discussions with the Moldovan authorities so as to assess the macroeconomic situation in the country and review the IMF supported program under the Extended Credit Facility and to formulate proposals for a new assistance program.
