The new draft energy strategy until 2030 was published for public consultations. According to the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure, the document is aimed at meeting the challenges that threaten the stable functioning of the energy system and at making use of the opportunities of integrating the electric power and gas market of Moldova into the regional and European markets. Under the new laws on electric power and natural gas, for the first time Parliament was empowered to adopt the given strategy, IPN reports.
The document specifies the methods of modernizing the sector so as to ensure energy security and to positively influence the environment and quality of life.
In 2018 – 2020, the launched reforms are to be completed. In 2021 – 2025, the necessary interconnections will be built and the national natural gas and electric power market will be integrated into the regional market and later into the common market of the EU member states. The interconnections will enable to diversify the routes and sources of electricity and gas supply.
In 2026 – 2030, there will be implemented the main principles concerning the free circulation and ensured access to the EU energy resources. Emphasis will be placed on the attraction of investments to the energy sector.
According to the consumption forecast, the demand for electric power in 2030 will rise by about 31.6% on 2016. The demand will be 32.5% satisfied with locally produced power and 67.5% satisfied with imported power. The electricity generated by thermoelectric plants will represent about 55.8% of the power production in 2030, as opposed to 92.5% in 2016, while 44.2% will be produced from renewable sources of energy.
The Moldova – Romania (Iași - Ungheni) interconnection is to be developed in the natural gas sector.
