New busts placed on Alley of Illustrious Scientists and Doctors of Chisinau

Six new busts appeared on the Alley of Illustrious Scientists and Doctors of Chisinau, of Alexandra Vizitiu, Constantin Matcovski, Vasile Chekurin, Ion Marin, Vasile Cuprianov and Alexei Molohov, IPN reports.

In the ceremony to unveil the six busts, rector of the University of Medicine an Pharmacy “Nicolae Testemițanu” Ion Ababii said that during 73 years of its foundation, the University developed nice traditions, such as the honoring of the frontrunners who wrote pages of glory in the history of Alma Mater and the national health system. To remember them, university departments and streets were given their names, bas-reliefs were inaugurated, brochures were printed and exhibitions were mounted.

“The Alley of Illustrious Scientists and Doctors is a new method of eternalizing the names of those who departed this life. It was created on the 70th anniversary of the foundation of our university. The alley consists of the busts of the most prominent representatives of the university who laid the foundations of the medical higher education, founded departments, contributed to the material and informational equipment, educated teachers and specialists, doctors and pharmacists,” stated Ion Ababii.

Mihail Ștefăneț, professor of the Human Anatomy Department, said academician Vasile Cuprianov was transferred to Chisinau from the Medical-Military Academy of St. Petersburg. His researches became known all over the CIS states and outside it. He promoted new scientific directions in transcapillary and juxtacapillary circulation in microcirculatory system and others.

Mircea Revenco, professor of the Psychiatry, Narcrology and Medical Psychology Division, spoke about Alexei Molohov, who founded the Psychiatry Department. “He is the author of over 90 scientific works and five monographies. I remember him as a kind and wise man who had very good relations with our patients, who are sometimes very difficult, and also with our employees,” stated the professor.

Nicolae Caproș, chair of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department, noted professor Ion Marin, alongside the great Testemițanu and lecturer Pulbere, founded orthopedics and traumatology in the Republic of Moldova. His activity in the field centered mainly on the orthopedics of the locomotor apparatus and bone tumors. “He was a big patriot with academic training and a honorable person,” stated Nicolae Caproș.

Veaceslav Goncear, head of the Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Department, said Constantin Matcovski during several decades covered all the stages of a successful medical career. Working at the Pharmacology Department, he played a significant role in instituting medicine teaching in Romanian and took an active part in the translation of pharmacology textbooks from Russian. He was the first dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy that was founded in 1964 and in 1966-1968 served as pro-rector.

Alexandru Cotici, lecturer of the Microbiology Department, spoke about Alexandra Vizitiu who headed the Department and was a real model of perseverance in work and research.

Vladimir Popa, consultant professor at the Otorhinolaryngology Department, stated Vasile Chekurin made history in otorhinolaryngology and owing to him the Department became an example. “Now we, but mainly the young ones, have the duty to develop what he created. These young people successfully implement the new methods of diagnosis and treatment owing to the insistence of those who worked together with Chekurin,” said Vladimir Popa.

The Alley of Illustrious Scientists and Doctors was inaugurated in October 2015. This includes the busts of rectors Ipatie Sorocean, Nicolae Testemițanu, Leonid Cobâleanschi, Nicolai Starostenko, professors Nicolae Anestiade, Natalia Gheorghiu, Vasile Procopishin, Constantin Țâbârnă and many others.
