1 173 million voters participated in the general local elections of October 20, representing almost 42% of the number of eligible voters. According to the online data presented by the Central Electoral Commission at 21:00, voters aged between 56 and 70 years were the most active, having a share of 34.28% of the total number of votes.
Voter turnout in Chișinău municipality was 36.05%, which represents 229.5 thousand voters. 37.3 thousand citizens cast their votes in Bălți, representing 36.11%. In ATU Gagauzia, voter turnout was 45.01%, representing 59.1 thousand voters.
The candidate who accumulates 50% + one vote in the mayoral race, wins the election. If none of the candidates manages to reach this threshold, a second round of elections is organized, in which the first two hopefuls from the previous round participate. The candidate that gathers the most number of votes in the second round, wins.
Voter turnout in the general local elections of June 2015 was 48.95%.
