NATO reiterates its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally recognized borders and calls on Russia to withdraw all of its forces stationed in the Transnistrian region without Moldova’s consent, says a joint statement issued at the NATO Vilnius Summit, IPN reports.

The NATO Allies reaffirmed that they stand firm in their support for Moldova’s right to decide its own future and foreign policy course free from outside interference, and fully respect Moldova’s constitutional neutrality.

NATO welcomed Moldova’s efforts to promote democratic reforms and is committed to supporting Moldova as it advances its European integration. NATO will continue to provide practical assistance through the enhanced Defense Capacity Building Package, as Moldova works to strengthen its security and defense capabilities and modernize its Armed Forces.

In connection with his participation in the Summit, Moldova’s Deputy Premier Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, in an interview for RFE/RL’s Romanian Service, stated that the Republic of Moldova wants Ukraine to be profoundly integrated into the European and Euro-Atlantic organizations as Moldova’s security is also ensured this way. Any measures that help Ukraine to resist and free its own territories contribute to strengthening the Republic of Moldova’s security. Ukraine’s movement towards NATO is also a factor that will further help the Republic of Moldova to remain stable. The status of neutrality of the Republic of Moldova “remains valid” even if it is insufficient to ensure security.
