The first 20 tonnes of pesticides of the total 170 tonnes stored on the territory of Taraclia district on October 21 set off for Poland, where they will be destroyed, IPN has learned from the Ministry of Defense.

Mariana Grama, head of the National Army’s Ecology and Environment Protection Division, said the chemicals were packed and loaded by a group of eight servicemen. The 170 tonnes of pesticides from Taraclia district will be taken away by November 12.

The noxious substances are removed within the final stage of the NATO Partnership for Peace Project for the successful destruction of pesticides and chemicals in Moldova that started on July 9. Within this project, about 1,270 tonnes of pesticides will be taken to Poland and destroyed there by next May.

Through the NATO/PfP Trust Fund, there was collected about €2.2 million for the implementation of the final stage of the project, €325,000 of which represents the contribution of Moldova. The rest of the money was donated by Romania.

As many as 170 tonnes of pesticides have taken from Moldova to Germany and destroyed there this year.
