A National Seed Research and Production Center is to be created in Moldova. The new public entity will be responsible for conducting scientific research to ensure the country’s food security.
According to a decision approved by the Government, the National Seed Research and Production Center will be established through the reorganization of the Porumbeni Phytotechnics Institute, which will take over the Selecția Field Crops Research Institute.
“Endemic varieties and hybrids possess increased production potential, have greater resistance to drought conditions in our country and represent the optimal solution to achieve the expected output. However, the local sector for the production of seed material of higher biological categories is in stagnation and cannot face the competition of foreign producers”, said Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry. According to the minister, the reform will solve the problems that prevent the development and modernization of the seed production sector.
The National Seed Research and Production Center will have a staff limited to 175 employees.
