Parliament passed a bill to create the National Register of Public Monuments in the first reading on July 20, IPN report.

The register will be a table classified by the code, address, localities, name and building date of the monument and will include monuments of category A, which are classed according to the artistic and urbanistic, memorial- symbolic value and age of the monument, IPN reports.

According to secretary of state at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research Andrei Chistol, the register will take over the plastic arts memorials from the Register of State Protected Monuments of the Republic of Moldova. The creation of the National Register of Public Monuments will help to monitor and protect the monuments and to work out zonal monument protection plans that will be included in the cadastral database.

Liberal MP Roman Botan asked that the memorials that glorify totalitarian regimes should not be included in this register. The leader of the Liberal parliamentary group Mihai Ghimpu supported the proposal, saying the occupation, famine and organized deportations will be legalized this way.

The Socialist and Communist MPs expressed their dissatisfaction. Communist MP Vladimir Voronin said those who struggle against monuments cannot understand the events of the past and have no dignity.

In the same sitting, Parliament adopted a bill to amend the Register of State Protected Monuments of the Republic of Moldova.
