On each third Sunday of September, Moldova will celebrate the National Plum Festival, after Parliament voted to amend an official list of national observances.
The sponsors of the amendment, a group of PAS lawmakers, said that the holiday was requested by the local authorities and that it aimed to promote Moldova as a nation “with high plum cultivation and processing potential”.
Plums are Moldova’s second leading fresh fruit export and place our country among the top 10 global exporters. Plum orchards are estimated to cover a total 22,100 hectares, yielding an overall crop of 123,730 tonnes. This is predicted to increase to 150,000 tonnes by 2025 due to intensive cultivation orchards.
