The initiative group called the National Movement for People has announced an antigovernment protest for February 28. The protesters will ask for a response from the Parliament and the President to the resolution adopted in the February 19 protest.

In a news conference housed by IPN, Shor Party MP Marina Tauber, a member of the Movement, said the citizens offered the country’s administration seven days to provide a response to the demand to fully subsidize the population’s bills for energy resources for the winter season. “We will demand that the high-ranking officials, the country’s administration go out to the people and respond through the agency of an official document and also comment and answer the questions,” stated Marina Tauber.

So far, the volunteers of the Movement have collected about 400,000 signatures in support of the initiative. The leaders of the initiative group called on the Government and President Maia Sandu to find time and examine the formulated demands.

Another member of the Movement, chairman of the Centrist Union of Moldova Mihai Petrache said there are suspicions about the correctness and legality of the actions taken by the government’s representatives the past four-five months to sign contracts for the purchase of gas and electrical energy. They suspect that dubious schemes have been implemented. The citizens have the right to know how the public funds are spent. Seven days is a reasonable timeframe for providing responses.

Tatiana Bordeaianu, deputy chairwoman of the Party “We Build Europe at Home”, said the National Movement for People includes political parties with different views, but with common care for the benefit of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. About 10,000 volunteers are involved in the collection of signatures physically, while those who are not in the country can sign online. Tents of the Movement for People are present in each town of the Republic of Moldova. The volunteers also go to people’s homes.

The protest will be staged in front of the Chisinau City Hall starting at 12:30pm.
