The National Library of the Republic of Moldova joined the global initiative Safer Internet Day and on this occasion stages a series of activities as part of the program Safer Internet Days at the National Library (February 8-16).

The institution’s director Elena Pintilei has told IPN that the COVID-19 pandemic showed the information provided online and the technologies made available to young people contribute to their development and the development of communities, to the formation of opinions. “The Internet used primarily by young people offers both advantages and risks. A posting can become viral on the Internet, while the posted photo can be faked and can be later used against the person who published this. To prevent such situations, online safety should be discussed not only on the Safer Internet Day, but also on other occasions,” stated Elena Pintilei. She called on the students to take part in the events held by the National Library on this occasion.

On February 9, there was staged an interactive session entitled “Ten things you may not know about artificial intelligence”. Students of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Science of the State University of Moldova learned about artificial intelligence from expert Ilie Chirtoacă, of the Legal Resources Center from Moldova, and were helped to better realize the possible implications of technologies based on artificial intelligence.

On February 10, the National Library, together with experts from Moldova, Romania and Austria, will stage an online public lesson titled “Artificial intelligence to everyone’s understanding”, moderated by expert Veronica Crețu, co-president of the National Committee for Open Government on the part of civil society, Moldova’s representative at CAHAI (Ad hoc Committee on Artificial Intelligence) of the Council of Europe (2019-2021).

Anda Bologa, affiliated expert in cybersecurity of the European Expertise Center “Europlus”, on February 16 will give a new interactive lesson intended for students.

The events held as part of the Safer Internet Day at the National Library of the Republic of Moldova will be recorded and will be broadcast on the institution’s YouTube channel. Later, they will be used by the Library at other meetings with young people.

Safer Internet Day is celebrated around the world in February of each year to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, primarily among children and young people.
