“The emblem of our country’s sovereignty and independence, the national flag, illustrates the tradition embraced by the people of this land and represents the aspirations and values of our citizens,” President Maia Sandu stated on the occasion of the National Flag Day that is marked on April 27, IPN reports.

President Sandu noted that 31 years ago, the members of the Independence Parliament adopted the tricolor with the coat of arms as the new flag of the county. After the declaring of independence, this flag became one of the official symbols of the Republic of Moldova, alongside the coat of arms and anthem.

Parliament celebrated this day by a symbolical event to render homage to the national flag that was instituted by the members of Moldova’s first Parliament on April 27, 1990. In the morning, MPs and employees of the legislature’s Secretariat were met at the entrance with small flags and other state symbols. Images of Moldova’s flag and coat of arms were projected on screens in the halls of the Parliament Building.

Speaker Zinaida Grechanyi addressed a message to the citizens. “I congratulate all the citizens on the occasion of this holiday and urge them to be proud of the national symbols, no matter where they are. The grandeur of our flag should increase together with the development of our country and the welfare of the people of the Republic of Moldova,” stated the official.

On the same occasion, Acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi said that having democracy as a pillar, the rule of law, protection and observance of the basic human rights, the national flag is a messenger of the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Moldova, being carried with pride by multiple compatriots who are abroad, offering a feeling of pride and affiliation to the country and the national values.

Also today, the Agency for Memory Science and Military mounted a temporary thematic exhibition entitled “Historical flags and coats of arms of the Republic of Moldova”. The exhibits belong to collector Petru Costin.

The national flag was instituted officially on April 27, 1990 by the first Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. On April 23, 2010, the legislature voted to declare April 27 the National Flag Day. The National Coat of Arms Day is marked the same day.
