The National Chess Academy calls on the central and local public authorities to set up chess centers in settlements. The initiative forms part of the chess promotion campaign “We Develop Moldova by Chess”.

In a news conference at IPN, the Academy’s manager general Ion Garnet said the campaign’s objective is to open as many chess centers in settlements as possible so as to enable the children to play this game and to become more agile, intelligent and future European and world champions.

A chess center for over 90 children was instituted in Cricova town of Chisinau municipality on March 14. The Academy provided chess inventory and teaching aids for it. The next chess center will be launched in Orhei town on March 30. An international tournament will be held there, which will involve children from at least six districts, including Transnistria. All the students are invited to the competition.

“We are now holding discussions with district heads on the opening of chess centers in other settlements. We call on the local managers to be open to this social campaign and to join it. The setting up of the centers does not need significant contributions, while the benefit for children is enormous,” said Ion Garnet, adding that the local authorities can contribute by paying salaries to teachers and identifying a head office.

On March 22-29, the National Chess Academy will hold a training session that will involve ten chess teachers trained and certified by the Academy and over 40 children from both banks of the Nistru River. The event is held within the Academy’s project “Chess Unites” that is financed by the EU and UNDP. The project will close with a chess festival in the second decade of April.

Moldova’s champion, international master Ruslan Soltanici said the Chess Olympiad that starts in Norway on August 1 is an important event for chess players. The national men’s and women’s team prepare to take part in it. The lineup will be agreed in a month. The European Juniors Championship will take place in Iasi in July. Moldova will be also represented there.

Under an order by the Ministry of Education, the National Chess Academy of Moldova is the only institution authorized to train chess teachers.
