On the National Reading Day marked on February 14, President Maia Sandu announced the launch of the nationwide reading promotion campaign entitled “Open Book”. The librarians or teachers who are fond of reading are encouraged to create Reading Clubs in schools, libraries or cultural centers, IPN reports.

“No matter where you are, in towns or villages, I urge and encourage you to set up Reading Clubs for the small ones or for grownups in schools, libraries or cultural centers. Not much is necessary for the purpose – only a friendly space, enthusiasm, passion and thirst for discovery. In discussions about books, any opinion is welcome, is not criticized and is not judged,” says President Sandu’s message.

Maia Sansu noted that reading develops the vocabulary and critical thinking, helps readers to overcome daily stress. “The readers are leaders – this is the reality of our century – and we should bring up in our country new generations of leaders – intelligent, creative, free in thinking, able to adjust to any circumstances and become competitive all over the world,” noted the official.

Starting with this year, through the national project “Open Book”, students will be able to meet with writers, poets, journalists accompanied by books and the wish to share own knowledge.

The campaign is supported by the President of the Republic of Moldova, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture, the National Museum of Romanian Literature and creation unions.

The National Reading Day is celebrated on February 14, on the birthday of the great bard Grigore Vieru. A relevant decision was taken by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova on March 31, 2022.
