National Bureau of Statistics suggests postponing census

The census that is to be taken in Moldova between April 1 and 14 may be put off. Such a proposal was discussed by the Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities. Deputy Speaker Liliana Palihovici said the reasons are financial in character, IPN reports.

46% of the money needed to take the census was to be covered with foreign funds. As the allocation of the money was deferred, the National Bureau of Statistics proposed holding the census later, on May 12-25.

The proposal was backed by six commission members of the 12 attending. A final decision will be taken by Parliament.

The census will last for 14 days. The categories of people who will be interviewed include: people with ordinary residence in Moldova; temporarily absent people, people working or studying abroad; the personnel of Moldova’s embassies and consular offices; people with temporary residence in Moldova.

The census consists in the official counting of the population and animals. A sum of 90 million lei is needed for the purpose. The last population census in Moldova was taken in 2004.
