In 2011 the National Bank of Moldova will mint a new series of commemorative coins themed “Historical Events”. The new series will include three different coins: the first is devoted to the 20th anniversary of Moldova's proclamation of independence, the second to the 575th anniversary of Chisinau and the third to the 20th anniversary of the National Bank's foundation, Info-Prim Neo reports. The series “Prominent Figures” will add a coin dedicated to the 180th anniversary of architect Alexandru Bernardazzi, the creator of over 30 landmark buildings in Chisinau. An addition to the “Classics Alley” series will be a coin featuring Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu, prominent Romanian writer, philologist, encyclopedist, folklore collector, journalist and politician. Carols will be the theme of an addition to the series “Moldova's Holidays, Culture and Customs”. “Moldova's Endangered Species” series will add the Common Spoonbill, a bird whose population in Moldova is alarmingly shrinking. The new coins will be non-circulating legal tender. To the date Moldova's central bank has issued 70 types of commemorative coins.
