This year 583 military men of the National Army participated in 43 activities within the Programme “Partnership for Peace”, 104 of whom in five exercises. Also in this period, ten officers served or are still serving as military observers in peacekeeping operations under the aegis of UN or OSCE, while another 11 in the post-conflict missions in Iraq.
This data was made public by the head of the General Staff, National Army Commander, Brigade General Ion Coropcean, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. In the Commander’s opinion, in the last few years it is attested an improvement in the professional level of preparing the military staff, a fact confirmed by the multinational exercises organised for the first time in Moldova, where 54 Moldovan officers took part performing key-tasks. Coropcean affirmed that the military exercises in September proved once more to all the states that the National Army complies with the international standards and can cooperate with other armed forces.
In the context, Coropcean added that the staff of the National Army succeeded this year in showing at international level that Moldova is a reliable partner with a high-level human and military technical potential.
Defence Minister Valeriu Plesca said that despite the efforts made, we did not manage to exclude the cases of breaching military discipline and law order. In 2006 there were registered 96 incidents in the military institutions, especially those related to persons that leave the unit without permission, abuse of power, breaching of security rules, etc. In addition, the Defence minister mentioned that next year the Army’s leadership will promote a tough policy as concerns persons that violate the provisions of the legislation, regardless of the function and the position they held.
