The deputy head of the National Administration of Penitentiaries (NAP) Sergey Demchenko, was remanded in custody again so as to ensure the efficiency of investigations. On March 10, the Chisinau City Appeals Court accepted the appeal of prosecutors of the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases against the Chisinau City Court’s decision concerning Demchenko, IPN reports.
In a press release, the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases says the Chisinau City Appeals Court ordered house arrest for the NAP deputy head.
On February 15, Sergey Demchenko was arrested for 72 hours. On February 24, searches were conducted at Penitentiary No. 15 in Cricova within the case featuring Demchenko. He is suspected of abuse of power in the interests of a criminal organization and faces three to eight years in jail and ban on holding particular posts or performing particular activities for a period of 10 to 15 years.
