The son of Nionela Popovich went to the front when he was 30 and did not return. When leaving, he said that this piece of land, the Moldovan territory situated on the left bank of the Nistru, should be defended. “This war left painful memories and cost us the flower of the Romanian nation. But we must not forget as a people without memories is a dead people,” the woman said in a meeting held to commemorate 20 years of the start of the war, Info-Prim Neo reports. Nionela Popovich also said that persons who lost their dead people in the conflict decided to set up a museum where to bring together things that would remind of those who fell in the war for defending Moldova’s integrity. She added we continue to be provoked and reminded the case when a Russian peacekeeper shot dead a young man at a checkpoint near Vadul lui Voda in January. General Anton Gamurari, who took part in the armed conflict, said that 20 years ago he had to cross the Nistru on ice in order to defend the peaceful people living on the left side of the river. “Many persons were killed in that war. Nobody has the right to blame the veterans and tell them that nobody sent them there,” he stated. General Nicolae Petrica, ex-commander of the bridge head Cocieri, expressed his regret at the fact that the veterans of the armed conflict have been neglected for 20 years. “20 years ago we were a team, but now we are divided into organizations and quarrel with each other,” he stressed, adding not the authorities, but they are to blame for this. In the meeting organized at the Memorial Complex “Eternity”, there were fired shots in memory of the combatants killed in battle and there was observed a moment’s silence.
